2016

In the text Iexplore the picture of the main characters old age. The question concerns possible existence any difference between woman’s and man’s old age. There are two main characters, the older couple Maric who live on the nameless island what is the symbol of their loneliness and insulation, too. The picture of the old age is negative and pessimistic. It is connected with fear of death, diseases, boredom, powerless. The woman’s and man’s old age are really similar although Katarina submitted to aging when her husband needed more time. At first he was dissented at all. It is the theme of the most interesting text The old dog.

Spectropolarimetric evidence for a siphon flow along an emerging magnetic flux tube

2016

©2017 The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved. We study the dynamics and topology of an emerging magnetic flux concentration using high spatial resolution spectropolarimetric data acquired with the Imaging Magnetograph eXperiment on board the sunrise balloon-borne solar observatory. We obtain the full vector magnetic field and the line of sight (LOS) velocity through inversions of the Fe i line at 525.02 nm with the SPINOR code. The derived vector magnetic field is used to trace magnetic field lines. Two magnetic flux concentrations with different polarities and LOS velocities are found to be connected by a group of arch-shaped magnetic field lines. The positive polarity footp…

Short telomere length is associated with impaired cognitive performance in European ancestry cohorts

2017

AbstractThe association between telomere length (TL) dynamics on cognitive performance over the life-course is not well understood. This study meta-analyses observational and causal associations between TL and six cognitive traits, with stratifications on APOE genotype, in a Mendelian Randomization (MR) framework. Twelve European cohorts (N=17 052; mean age=59.2±8.8 years) provided results for associations between qPCR-measured TL (T/S-ratio scale) and general cognitive function, mini-mental state exam (MMSE), processing speed by digit symbol substitution test (DSST), visuospatial functioning, memory and executive functioning (STROOP). In addition, a genetic risk score (GRS) for TL includin…

Towards understanding nonmanuality : A semiotic treatment of signers’ head movements

2019

This article discusses a certain type of nonmanual action, signers’ head movements, from a semiotic perspective. It presents a typology of head movements and their iconic, indexical and symbolic features based on Peircean and post-Peircean semiotics. The paper argues for the view that (i) indexical strategies are very prominent in head movements, (ii) iconic features are most evident in enacting, while non-enacting description is less common, (iii) symbolic types for tokens are infrequent, although some movements—such as nodding and shaking the head—may become more conventional or schematized, and (iv) different types of head movements involve different proportions of iconicity, indexicalit…

On some difficulties of putting in dialogue animal rights with anthropological debates: a historical view in three episodes

2018

In this paper, I try to identify the reasons why the dialogue between sociocultural anthropology and animal rights theories and movements continues to be difficult and scarce. At first sight this weakness of communication is surprising, if one looks at the amount of anthropological studies on human/animal relationships, in most cases pointing to how animals are considered in many cultures as non- human subjects or persons. For understanding the roots of this state of affairs, I compare the ways anthropologists and animal rights theorists and activists have engaged with the issue of the differences and commonalities between human beings and nonhuman animals. For this aim, I contrast the sear…

Tracing the indexicalization of the notion "Helsinki s"

2017

AbstractEarlier research has concluded that there is a strong symbolic relationship between Helsinki as a place and non-standard /s/ pronunciation. This phenomenon is likewise in continuous evidence in the Finnish media and social media. The notion of “Helsinki s” has become a folk linguistic fact although it lacks a clear linguistic correlate or even status as a linguistic fact. The only sibilant of the Finnish language is officially a voiceless alveolar, while the “Helsinki s” is most often discussed as “hissing”, “sharp” or “fronted”. However, according to recent research based on listening tasks, any /s/ may be designated and discussed as a “Helsinki s” if the speaker is regarded as a H…

2014

Matei Visniec (1956) is an author from Romania, who uses both French and Romanian expression in his plays. The coordinates of his dramatic fictional universe bring together the absurd, the symbolic, the fantastic and the conflicts in the city of men, sometimes with accurate historical and current references. Animals, present onstage in many different ways, are very common in his plays. They constitute a strange wildlife between animal and human, between the real and the fantastic.Their presence in this theatrical universe fits into their symbolic aspect, which defies the imagination by means of what is enigmatic and incomprehensible; but it also falls into their committed side to the extent…
